Disease Description.
Bacterial disease (salmonella typhimurium Var. Copenhagen) that causes more deaths in pigeons. It´s spread in several ways: by inhalation of dust containig germs in poorly ventilated loft, food or water infected by dirty feeders and water bowls, pigeon egg spread, feeding pigeons with beak or crop infected and pigeons infected and seem cured by expelling the bacteria in irregular steps.
Early death in young and adults cured become carriers, so it is the best to eliminate them. Disease of autumn-winter, also called paratiphosis.
Symptons of Salmonellosis.
– Once ingested salmonellae colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and through the blood reach to other organs: lungs, liver, spleen, testes, ovaries, pancreas, kidneys, muscles, eyes, feet and joints).
– Symtoms varied according to the affected organ.
Sharply: in young pigeons. Viscous and greenish droppings, some affected organs (liver, kidneys, spleen), slow growth. weight loss and death.
– Chronic: in adult pigeons. Swollen joints, wing and leg paralysis and loss of balance.
Treatment of Salmonellosis.
– Analysis of droppings and organs. Vaccine low effectiveness. Cleaning and disinfecting the loft and the pigeons, antibiotics and vitamins.
– Treat all dovecote and pigeons seriously ill remove or isolate them and make frequent bacteriological work at the end of the treatment.
