Disease Description.
Coccidians are parasites with great ease of reproduction and transmission. Colonizes the greater part of cells, organs and systems. Living in the intestinal wall of the pigeon to get nutrients they need to survive. If the pigeons live together, are infected by the others with ease because they expel them with the crap. The coccidians begin to parasitize the animal: egg-shaped, are microscopic and extend for all areas in the cage or in the farm. With 25ºC of temperature and high humidity is when they begin to parasite. The eggs are multiplying. Once the eggs are released with the crap, is when the infestation starts (48-72 hours later). When a pigeon eats it, is infested with coccidians.
Symptons of Coccidiosis.
– Increases the volume of the abdomen and excrements are abundant, soft and with the possibility of blood. Increased appetite of the pigeon sick but progressive thinning because the intestines are not assimilating nutrients.
– If more severe infection, possibility to affect other organs, symptoms more evident and raises mortality. Increase the volume of the abdomen, dark stain of the liver that increases in size and drowsiness.
– The young pigeons are weaker because they don´t have well-developed their immune system.
Symptons of Coccidiosis.
– Microscopic examination of tissues of intestinal wall; it is the best way to detect them.
– Anticoccidial treatment in the drinking water combining it with others products: sulfonamides, amprolium or toltrazuril. Monensina: very effective against coccidia. It is recommended the daily cleaning of the cage and to inolate the sick ones.
