Tricomoniasis (Canker) in pigeons.

 

Disease Description.

Tricomonas gallinae (or Tricomonas columbae) is a microorganism able to reproduce itself in liquids. Penetrates into the mucous through small injuries: cereals can cause small sores in the mouth and esophagus of the young pigeons. Also by water: this is why it is important to clean daily drinkers.
Can be transmitted to the newborn by the presence of microorganisms in the nest to the navel. It´s a common disease in all kind of birds; the little ones are more sensitive.

Symptons of Trichomoniasis.

– Small yellow dots in the throat. Posibility of live adult pigeons with them (80% are carriers); but if they have low defenses, is manifested the disease. Also when the infestation is strong. 
– Present aspect listless, ruffled feathers, thinning by diarrhea, increase in thirst and decreased appetite.
– In the mouth: when you open the beak, in the throat, yellow spots which may interfere with breathing.
In the navel: penetrate the parasites of the nest in the navel because it is not yet closed wound and it manifests itself with inflammation of the skin.
– Organic form: spread to internals organs through the mouth on the navel. In the liver are clear visible, not in the rest of the body. If the pigeon survives to the organic shape, become weaker.
